Members of the Springlake Earth  FFA Chapter Receives Lone Star FFA Degree
 
(Corpus Christi) Will Geissler, Jacy York, Michelle Jones, Balee McCurry, and Kassidy Riley, of the Springlake Earth FFA chapter, was awarded the Lone Star FFA Degree at the 82nd annual Texas FFA Convention held here July 13-16. The Lone Star FFA Degree is the highest degree bestowed by the Texas FFA.
 
The Lone Star FFA Degree recognizes FFA members who have received the Chapter degree, been active FFA members for at least two years, complete at least four semesters of agricultural science at or above the ninth grade level, maintain a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program, demonstrate their leadership skills and show a commitment to the FFA through involvement at the chapter level and above. Will, Jacy, Michelle, Balee and Kassidy were one of more than 1,400 FFA members receiving this esteemed degree.
 
The 82nd annual Texas FFA Convention recorded 11,120 members and guests. Members of the agricultural youth leadership organization spent the week attending leadership workshops, participating in events and activities, being recognized for their achievements and serving as the legislative body for the Texas FFA Association.
 
The Texas FFA has evolved from an organization focusing primarily on production agriculture, to a broader-based encompassing organization that addresses the needs and interests of students in urban and suburban schools in addition to the rural communities from which FFA rose in 1929.
 
The Texas FFA is the nation’s largest state FFA associations with a membership of approximately 74,000 and more than 1,000 local FFA chapters. FFA gives students the opportunity to apply practical classroom knowledge to real world experiences through local, state and national competitions. Springlake Earth FFA Members Attend Texas FFA Convention in Corpus Christi
 

 (Corpus Christi) - Eleven members from the Springlake –Earth  FFA chapter attended the 82nd annual Texas FFA Convention held here July 13-16.  

 
Springlake –Earth FFA members who attended the convention are Will Geissler,  Jacy York, Kassidy Riley, Melissa Green, Balee McCurry, Courtney Galvan, Jaimee Larkin, Kailtyn Dear, Garrett Bigham. Sky Nutt, and Michelle Jones.
 
The 82nd annual Texas FFA Convention recorded 11,120 members and guests. Members of the agricultural youth leadership organization spent the week attending leadership workshops, participating in events and activities, being recognized for their achievements and serving as the legislative body for the Texas FFA Association.
 
More than $2 million in scholarships were awarded to FFA members and approximately 1,300 members received the Lone Star FFA Degree, the highest degree of active membership bestowed by a state FFA association. More than 700 members were recognized on stage for their accomplishments.
 
Members also competed for state titles in public speaking and agriscience events. In the interest of premier leadership, personal growth and career success, the Texas FFA Association also offered an opportunity for students to compete in a Spanish version Creed Speaking Event for the first time in its history. The Creed delivery and the five-minute question-answer period were conducted entirely in Spanish.
 
Texas FFA honored soldiers and all American military service personnel, including Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Donald “Doc” E. Ballard, during the Honoring Our Heroes Ceremony. Colonel Ballard currently serves as Special Assistant to the Adjutant General, making him one of only three Medal of Honor recipients on active service in the United States today.
 
Members heard from National FFA Western Region Vice President Randa Braune, as well as motivational speakers Josh Sundquist and Albert Mensah.
 
Texas Country music artist Kyle Park performed exclusively for FFA members. Park has written or co-written all 12 songs on his new album, “Anywhere in Texas,” his most recent hit being “Don’t Look.”

Star - Production Ag

Garrett Bigham

 

 

Garrett Bigham representing the Springlake Earth FFA Chapter and the Area I Association was one of ten students selected statewide as a finalist for Star Freshman in  Production Agriculture.  He was recognized on stage during the Stars Session of the 82nd  Annual Texas FFA Convention held in Corpus Christie, TX June 12th – 16th.  Previously, Garrett had been selected as the Plainview District Star in Production before being named the Area I Star.  Pictured above are State Officers Kaleb McLaurin and Allison Grainger; Garrett Bigham Springlake; McKenzie Caddell – Stamford; Laramie Naumann – Brenham; Madison Yandell – Iowa Park; Travis Mitchell – Ponder; Jackson McQueen – Gilmer; Bridget O’Brien -  Smithson Valley; Tana Luna – Troy; Rhett Wilson – Barbers Hill; Colton Beam – Falls City; and representatives from the Richard Wallrath Foundation.

 Area Leadership Camp

 

Clarendon, Texas – The  Springlake Earth FFA Chapter recently attended the Area I Leadership Conference held at Clarendon College on June 21-23, 2010.  The conference focused on helping the FFA chapters develop leadership skills and activities.  Workshops were taught by the current Area I FFA Officer team:  Brandon Winters  –President from Bushland,  Sheldon Franks – 1st Vice President fro Follett, and Vice-presidents Paul Booth - Levelland, Eric Evans- Plainview, Khaki Schrivner- Valley,  and Kelsey Mazurek – Lubbock Cooper.  Also, the incoming and outgoing Area I State FFA Officers each had interesting workshops for FFA members.  University Ag students from WTAMU served as presenters.  Also, there was a special workshop sponsored by Jay Newton, Alfredo Rodriguez, and Kendra Martin with special help from Special Presenters:  Trooper Dan Hawthorne and TxDot Representative Barbara Seal.  The workshop concentrated on  Community Development – “DNTTXTNDRIVE.”  This workshop opened student’s eyes to the dangers of texting and driving. Every year thousands are killed by texting and driving. This hands-on workshop help to realize how dangerous this truly is.      There was lots of water, cow tongues, eggs, oil and slippery fun held at the annual “Ag Fest” competition, which always serves as the highlight to promote the spirit of competition workshop.    Over 348 Outstanding young men and women who serve as chapter officers, members and more than 72 of their agricultural science teachers were in attendance.  The banquet meal on Tuesday night, prepared by the ag teachers was enjoyed by nearly 425 members and guests.  Mr. Bobby Smithson served as theg guest speaker.  The members from the Springlake Earth FFA chapter were:  Will Geissler, Melissa Green, Jacy York, Courtney Galvan, David Anstead, and Garrett Bigham, and Jaimee Larkin.

 Houston Calf Scramble March 18

Strength and determination took over for some, as scramblers began to capture the calves and pull them into the winners’ square. Representing Springlake Earth FFA was Garrett Bigham.

 In exchange for a successful scramble, the 4-H or FFA member will receive a $1,250 calf purchase certificate. The certificate is to be used for the purchase of a registered beef or dairy heifer.

Garrett’s scramble certificate was sponsored by Tex-Lam Manufracturing of Houston, TX. 
This is the beginning of a yearlong project of grooming, feeding and caring for the heifer. The exhibitor, supervised by an agricultural science teacher or county extension agent, must keep accurate and detailed records of the animal's progress, submitting records to both the Show and the donor to chronicle the heifer's development. 
In 2011, the exhibitor will return with the heifer to the Houston Livestock Show™ for a special competition and a $250 bonus from his/her donor. Prior to the 2011 Show, exhibitors now have the opportunity to compete in the Calf Scramble Progress Show as a means of judging their calf’s progress prior to showing at the Houston Livestock Show.  
Each year, approximately 350 calf purchase certificates are donated. Since the calf scramble was added to the Show in 1942, a total of $9,835,500 has been awarded in certificates and bonuses to 18,242 youth.

David’s scramble certificate was sponsored by James and Kim Leggett representing Builders Landscape from Richmond, TX. Chris’s certificate will be sponsored by Knowledge Based Systems, Inc. from Cypress, TX.

 San Antonio Division Champion

San Antonio, TX 2/13/2010---- Quentin and Justin Been exhibited the Reserve Champion Senior Division Maine Anjou Heifer pair at the 2010 San Antonio Jr Breeding Heifer Show in San Antonio, TX on February 12th after placing 2nd in class.  Judge Jeff Sargent selected the cow/calf pair from the three other  class winners in the division.  The San Antonio Breeding Heifer show is the largest of the winter season shows as students are competing for $10,000 champion scholarships and Supreme Awards.  Quentin is a senior student at Springlake Earth High School and Justin is a 6th grade member of the Springlake Earth Jr FFA.

    


    

 Texas Veterinary Medicine Competition

Sam Houston State University; Huntsville, Tx; 2/5/2010 --- Three members of the Springlake Earth FFA participated in the Texas Veterinay Medicine Competition held on the campus of Sam Houston State University on February 5th.  Team members included Will Geissler, Ben Gresham, and Quentin Been.  Thje competition is held as an educational part of the Certified Veterinary Assistant I Classes now being offered at Springlake Earth High School. 

The competition included an exam on all aspects of veterinay medicine; laboratory procedures; office management; animal restraint; animal identification including dogs, cats, cattle, horses, swine, and birds; equipment identification; and skill applications.


    

 Earth Springlake Livestock Show
