 San Antonio Division Champion

San Antonio, TX 2/13/2010---- Quentin and Justin Been exhibited the Reserve Champion Senior Division Maine Anjou Heifer pair at the 2010 San Antonio Jr Breeding Heifer Show in San Antonio, TX on February 12th after placing 2nd in class.  Judge Jeff Sargent selected the cow/calf pair from the three other  class winners in the division.  The San Antonio Breeding Heifer show is the largest of the winter season shows as students are competing for $10,000 champion scholarships and Supreme Awards.  Quentin is a senior student at Springlake Earth High School and Justin is a 6th grade member of the Springlake Earth Jr FFA.

    


    

 Texas Veterinary Medicine Competition

Sam Houston State University; Huntsville, Tx; 2/5/2010 --- Three members of the Springlake Earth FFA participated in the Texas Veterinay Medicine Competition held on the campus of Sam Houston State University on February 5th.  Team members included Will Geissler, Ben Gresham, and Quentin Been.  Thje competition is held as an educational part of the Certified Veterinary Assistant I Classes now being offered at Springlake Earth High School. 

The competition included an exam on all aspects of veterinay medicine; laboratory procedures; office management; animal restraint; animal identification including dogs, cats, cattle, horses, swine, and birds; equipment identification; and skill applications.

Tatum Aldridge to Complete Practice Teaching at Springlake Earth High School
 
Earth, TX ---- Tatum Aldridge, a Senior Agricultural Education Major from West Texas A&M University in Canyon will be completing here degree this semester by completing her practice teaching in the Agricultural Science Program at Springlake Earth High School.  She will be under the supervision of Dr. Lance Keith,  Agricultural Education Department Head Professor and Alan Been, Agricultural Science Teacher at Springlake High School.  She began her time at Springlake Earth September 14 and will be a part of the Springlake Earth Faculty until December 7.
 
Tatum is from Olton, Texas.  She is the daughter of Jim and Janice Aldridge.  She graduated from Olton High School in 2005 where she was involved in FFA, 4H, basketball, track, golf, and cross country.  She participated in Livestock Evaluation and Dairy Cattle Evaluation which led to a scholarship to judge livestock at Howard College in Big Spring.  She has earned the Texas State FFA Degree and the 4H Gold Star.  While in high school she also carried out a successful supervised ag experience program of raising and exhibiting market barrows.
 
Tatum plans on completing her undergraduate degree at West Texas A&M and upon graduation, enrolling in the master’s program in the Department of Agricultural Education at Texas Tech University.  Upon completion, her goal is to become a certified Agricultural Science Instructor or County Extension Agent.

Odessa, TX --- Three members of the Springlake Earth FFA participated in the Permian Basin Fair in Odessa September 11 -13 exhibiting two breed champions in the Junior Heifer Show.  Garrett Bigham exhibited the Champion Angus heifer nd Quentin Been exhibited the Champion Maine Anjou Heifer.  Justin Been placed 4th with a Santa Gertrudis Steer.

Blake Fennell and Hunter Jones of Springlake Earth  FFA Receives Texas FFA  Scholarships
 
(Earth, TX)  – Blake Fennell of  the Springlake Earth FFA  chapter, was awarded a $ 10,000 scholarship, sponsored by Wallrath Foundation and Hunter Jones of  the Springlake Earth FFA  chapter, was awarded a $ 15,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at the 81st annual Texas FFA Convention held July 7-10, in Dallas, Texas.
 
Blake and Hunter were awarded for theiractive involvement in and dedication to the FFA. Both Blake and Hunter are recent graduates of Springlake Earth High School.
 
Blake is the son of Lexie and Kelley Fennell.  He served as a chapter officer for three years and was President this past year.  He has earned the Lone Star FFA Degree from his Supervised Ag Experience Programs of raising and showing market steers, raising and showing market barrows, raising stocker cattle, and participating in the Tractor Restoration Program.  He participated in Leadership and Career Development Events for four years on the chapter, district, and Area Levels.  This fall Blake will attend Texas Tech University.   Blake’s $10, 000 scholarship is provided by  the RICHARD WALLRATH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION.  Richard "Dick" Wallrath has invested more than $1.5 million in the young people of the Texas FFA to date.  This level of giving makes him the all-time largest donor in the 77-year history of the Texas FFA.  His name will echo in perpetuity, and eternity, thanks to his generosity.  Many communities, the Lone Star State, and this country will be a better place to live, work and raise our families as a result of his support and investment in the young people of Texas. Established in 2006 by the Dick Wallrath Educational Organization, seventy-one $10,000 scholarships are given to Texas FFA members who excel in academics. Recipients are selected based on academic performance and active FFA involvement.
 
Hunter is the son of Bob and Kelly Jones.  He has served as a Plainview District Treasurer.  He earned his Lone Star FFA Degree from his Supervised Ag Experience Programs of raising and showing market lambs, and raising and showing market goats.  He participated in public speaking leadership development events and the range and pasture identification and meats evaluation career development events.  This fall, Hunter will attend Texas Tech University.  Hunter’s $15, 000 scholarship is provided by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has awarded nearly $1.1 million in scholarships to 70 Texas Future Farmers of America members. Each of the FFA members received four-year, $15,000 college scholarships.  In 2009, the Livestock Show and Rodeo committed more than $15.9 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants and junior show exhibitors.  Since its beginning in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has contributed more than $235 million to the youth of Texas.
Each year, FFA members must submit an application and go through an interview process at the area level in order to be selected for Texas FFA scholarships.  Each area association submits scholarship finalists to the state scholarship committee for final scholarship application review and interview.

Quentin Been of the Springlake Earth FFA Chapter Receives Lone Star FFA Degree
 
(Dallas, TX)  – Quentin Been,  of the Springlake Earth  FFA chapter, was awarded the Lone Star FFA Degree at the 81st annual Texas FFA Convention held July 7-10, in Dallas, Texas. The Lone Star FFA Degree is the highest degree bestowed by the Texas FFA.
 
The Lone Star FFA Degree recognizes the members’ agricultural awareness, leadership, career development and active involvement in the FFA organization. Quentin  was one of more than 1,350 FFA members receiving this esteemed degree.
 
Dallas has been home to 13 Texas FFA conventions. Five of the first six Future Farmer conventions, 1929-33, were held in Dallas in conjunction with the State Fair of Texas. This year, the Texas FFA made history in Dallas. Members set an all-time attendance record with 11,760 members and guests, surpassing the record set at the 79th Annual Texas FFA Convention held in Corpus Christi with 10,321 members and guests.
 
The Texas FFA is one of the nation’s largest state FFA associations with a membership of more than 63,000 and 1,000 local FFA chapters. FFA gives students the opportunity to apply practical classroom knowledge to real world experiences through local, state and national competitions. Springlake Earth  FFA Members Attend Texas FFA Convention in Dallas
 
(Earth, TX ) - 11 members from the Springlake EarthFFA chapter attended the 81st annual Texas FFA Convention held July 7-10 in Dallas, Texas.  
 
Dallas has been home to 13 Texas FFA conventions. Five of the first six Future Farmer conventions, 1929-33, were held in Dallas in conjunction with the State Fair of Texas. This year, the Texas FFA made history in Dallas. Members set an all-time attendance record with 11,760 members and guests, surpassing the record set at the 79th Annual Texas FFA Convention held in Corpus Christi with 10,321 members and guests.
 
Springlake Earth FFA members who attended the convention are: Quentin Been, Will Geissler, Blake Fennell, Skye Nutt, Justin Been,  Michelle Jones, Balee McCurry, Jacy York, Jaimee Larkin, Kaitlyn Dear, and Hunter Jones,
 
Members of the agricultural youth leadership organization spent the week attending leadership workshops, participating in events and activities, being recognized for their achievements and serving as the legislative body for the Texas FFA Association.
 
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples a former state officer spoke to members. Commissioner Staples was elected to serve as state officer the last time the convention was held at Dallas in 1981-82.
 
More than $2 million in scholarships were awarded to FFA members and 1,352 members received the Lone Star FFA Degree, the highest degree of active membership bestowed by a state FFA association. More than 700 members were recognized on stage for their accomplishments. Members also competed for state titles in public speaking and agriscience events.
 
Members also heard from National FFA Western Region Vice President Riley Branch, as well as motivational speakers Krish Dhanam and Mark Mayfield.
 
Texas Country music artist Aaron Watson performed exclusively for FFA members. Watson is an Abilene-based artist who has released 10 records, his most successful being Angels & Outlaws.
 
The Texas FFA has evolved from an organization focusing primarily on production agriculture, to a broader-based encompassing organization that addresses the needs and interests of students in urban and suburban schools in addition to the rural communities from which FFA rose in 1929.
 
The transformation of FFA is evident through programs like the Texas FFA Agriscience Fair. The agriscience fair fuses the traditional science fair with agriculture. FFA members conduct cutting edge agricultural research to compete in categories such as biochemistry, environmental science, zoology, botany and engineering.
 
The Texas FFA is one of the nation’s largest state FFA associations with a membership of more than 63,000 and 1,000 local FFA chapters.  Area I Leadership Camp

 

 

 

Clarendon, Texas – The Springlake Earth FFA Chapter recently attended the Area I Leadership Conference held at Clarendon College on June 22-24, 2009. The conference focused on helping the FFA chapters develop leadership skills and activities. Workshops were taught by the current Area I FFA Officer team: Garrrett Gunn –President, Kenley Kleman – 1st Vice President, and Vice-presidents Gavin Luckett, Kylie Bourquin, Keagan Britton and Tanner Saunders. Also, the incoming and outgoing Area I State FFA Officers each had interesting workshops for FFA members. University Ag students from WTAMU served as presenters. There was lots of water, cow tongues, eggs, oil and slippery fun held at the annual “Ag Fest” competition, which always serves as the highlight to promote the spirit of competition workshop. A recent addition to camp that has been a favorite of many was the community service workshop. This year, our workshop focused on the nursing home located in Clarendon, Texas. Over 320 Outstanding young men and women who serve as chapter officers, members and more than 60 of their agricultural science teachers were in attendance. The banquet meal on Tuesday night, prepared by the ag teachers was enjoyed by nearly 400 members and guests. Mr. Bruce Cobb of Canyon, Texas, former state President from the Area I FFA Association, served as theg guest speaker.
